The Beauty of Marriage
The closest relationship on earth between two people is the relationship
between a husband and a wife. It is not between a
son and his mother, or between a father and his daughter. It is
not between two best friends, nor between grandparents and
grandchildren. No, it is between a man and a woman who have
made a covenant before Almighty God to love and to cherish
one another until death parts them.
Th e big decision
I always say to a prospective groom and his bride when counseling
them that the second most important decision they will
ever make in their lives is getting married, the fi rst of course
being the decision they make to give their lives to Christ Jesus.
I fi rmly believe that this is why the devil is playing such havoc
in the family: It is because he knows how precious the home
is to God, and that if he can destroy the family, he will effectively
destroy the nation, remembering that a country is only as strong
as the marriage unit.
If we go back to the beginning of creation we will see that
God created Adam and then saw that he was lonely. So God put
Adam into a deep sleep, took a rib out of his side and created a
helper for him: Eve. This we read about in Genesis 2:20-22: “But
for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused
the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He

took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with
fl esh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib He had
taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man.”
Adam, when he saw her, said that “this is now bone of my
bones, and fl esh of my fl esh” (Genesis 2:23). The Bible says that
for this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be
joined to his wife and they shall become one fl esh (see Genesis
Th e pain of divorce
Again I wish to stress the point that there is no other relationship
on earth that is closer or more intimate than marriage, because
the man and the woman literally become one person. Divorce
is disastrous, because it tears the relationship in half and with
it goes the peace and tranquility, the safety and security of the
home unit. This has a terrible effect on the children, on the
grand parents, the extended family and in fact on all those who
One really needs to think carefully before going to the divorce
courts. The pain infl icted on one another and the rest of the family
cannot be calculated – it is huge. Children lose confi dence in
themselves, their performance at school drops and breakdowns
can happen. In younger children, bed wetting is common, while
older children vow never to marry, having observed fi rsthand
the extreme hurt divorce causes. The divorcees themselves can
turn to drink and drugs, trying to forget the pain and shame.
They lose their faith in mankind or even God for that matter.
All these tragic results and statistics merely highlight the importance
and holiness of marriage. We need to guard our marriages
with our very lives. The Bible tells us that “what will it
profi t a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”
