Once more …
How did you fare with the 15 statements on the previous page?
Did you mark any of them as ‘True’? Well, they are all incorrect,
and the purpose of the next four chapters is to clarify why. (See
also Appendix A at the end of this book for a more detailed ex-
planation of why all these statements are false.)
If you have read Help! I’m a Manager AND you marked all of the
above statements as ‘False’, you may want to skip the next four
chapters. You obviously have a very good grasp of what does not
motivate subordinates in the workplace. On the other hand, you
may find it useful to review your understanding of what is meant
by motivation, particularly in the context of a manager motivating
a subordinate to achieve a high level of productivity. So read on.
The focus of this book will be a practical system to make sub-
ordinates not only feel like winners, but genuinely be winners in
their work situation. In this chapter I will define what I mean by
‘motivation’ and summarise the motivational theory that I put
forward in the above-mentioned book.
